Feel Safer in Your Body with the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

June 3, 2025 · 3 min read

For many people, talk therapy isn’t quite enough — especially when anxiety, trauma, or sensory overwhelm live in the body rather than the mind. You can understand intellectually why you feel unsafe. And yet your nervous system remains on high alert.

What Is the Safe and Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a non-invasive listening intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the neuroscientist behind Polyvagal Theory. It uses specially filtered music to stimulate the vagus nerve — sending a signal of safety to the nervous system at a physiological level.

Who Is SSP For?

  • People with anxiety or chronic stress who feel stuck even after talk therapy
  • Trauma survivors with somatic symptoms
  • People with sensory processing differences, including those on the autism spectrum
  • Children and adults with ADHD
  • Anyone struggling with auditory sensitivity or social connection

What Does It Feel Like?

SSP is delivered through a specialized app using over-ear headphones — typically about 5 hours total across multiple sessions. Many people notice feeling less reactive, more present, easier to regulate. Most effective alongside ongoing therapy. Reach out to learn whether SSP might be right for you.
